Rotator Cuff Repair

Causes

What causes rotator cuff tear?

A fractured collarbone and shoulder can cause the tearing of the rotator cuff.

The overuse of the shoulder muscles and tendons in sports or at work can result in a rupture of rotator cuff tendon.

Your muscles and tendons require a steady supply of blood to repair themselves. The tendons can tear if they don't get enough blood.

Bony growths on the apex of the shoulder bone are known as bone spurs. The bone spurs rub against the tendon when your arm is elevated. Friction between the bone and the tendon is caused by this shoulder impingement. A complete or partial tear may develop due to this friction.

Types & Treatment of Rotator Cuff Tear

The treatment will be suggested by the doctor after assessing your medical history, and the tear's state. Most rotator cuff tear do not heal without a surgery. Though the functional abilities can be enhanced and reduce pain by strengthening shoulder muscles.

Your Care Path

Types of rotator cuff tear

  • Partial tear: The rotator cuff tendon is injured but not fully destroyed in a partial tear.
  • Complete tear: The soft tissue is split into two separate parts in a complete tear. The tendons at the humerus frequently break away of where they're connected.
  • Acute tear: Acute tear is caused by stress or injury, such as falling or carrying anything too heavy, too rapidly or awkwardly.
  • Degenerative tear: The majority of rotator cuff tears are multifactorial in nature, resulting from a slow deterioration of the tendon over time, as well as heredity and other medical disorders like diabetes or high cholesterol. Degeneration is a natural part of growing older, and it increases the risk of harm with time.

Treatment

The treatment will be suggested by the doctor after assessing your medical history, and the tear's state. Most rotator cuff tear do not heal without a surgery. Though the functional abilities can be enhanced and reduce pain by strengthening shoulder muscles.

Nonsurgical therapy can help with partial tears, the repair is a long process and can take up to a year to heal.

Nonsurgical treatments include:

  • Taking proper rest and use of an arm sling to help your shoulder heal.
  • Putting your sports activities and other day to day actions on hold that might strain your shoulder.
  • Taking: NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) to reduce the pain and swelling as prescribed by the doctor
  • Doing strengthening and stretching exercises as recommended by your physical therapists (physiotherapist).
  • Taking steroid injections for pain and swelling as suggested by your doctor.

Surgery:

Three types of surgery used for treating a rotator cuff tear:

  • Arthroscopy: In this surgery a small tube is inserted through a tiny incision. A video monitor is linked to the scope. The surgeon can now see the inside of the shoulder. Other tools are placed through one to three additional tiny incisions.
  • Open repair: A surgical incision is made and the deltoid is gently pushed out of the way to do the surgery during open repair. A complicated and large tear will require an open repair surgery.
  • Mini-open repair: An arthroscope is used to remove or repair any damaged tissue or bone spurs during mini-open repair. The rotator cuff is then repaired with a 2- to 3-inch incision during the open stage of the procedure. The most advanced surgical technologies and highly qualified doctors are available at Mumbai's Kapadia Hospital to treat rotator cuff tears.
